Olivia Novosel - Assistant Editor
Hello! My name is Olivia, and I am in my second year of Life Sciences. I joined LifeBeat as it was an exciting opportunity to connect my passion for writing with my love for science. Being a part of this club allows me to broaden my understanding and knowledge of topics beyond the scope of my specialization. I love learning new things and teaching others, so my position as assistant editor and writer gives me the perfect opportunity to do so! I am especially interested in exploring and writing about topics related to neuroscience and healthcare. When I’m not studying, I enjoy baking (lemon tarts are my specialty!), playing tennis, and catching up with friends.

Sadia Akbar - 1st Year Intern
Hello! My name is Sadia and I am a first year Health Sciences student. I think science and medicine are such interesting fields because there are no limits to the innovations that can be made, all in the name of bettering the lives of others. I have a particular interest in public health, having been part of an outreach program in high school led by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at UofT. I love to read but have definitely been doing much less of it with the hectic workload of university. I also love binging Netflix, going to concerts, and spending hours doing Buzzfeed quizzes.

Hey, my name is Emily and I’m in first year, studying Computing. I have always been very interested in writing (code and other things), and that’s why I joined Lifebeat. I am particularly interested in mental health issues and how they affect young people, which are becoming increasingly prevalent each day. Aside from my love for writing, I am also passionate about sports and fitness. I am a competitive curler, so you can probably catch me practicing at a curling club here in Kingston!

Lifebeat newspaper 2017-2018
Lauren Lin - Editor in Chief, President
I'm Lauren, and I'm in my third year of Psychology. Although I enjoy learning about all areas of science, I am particularly interested in the myriad of factors that influence our psychological development and how they affect our mental health, perception of ourselves, and relationships with others. I've been a part of labs at the Ottawa Heart Institute as well as Psychology labs here at Queen's, and I love being involved in research. Editing and writing for Lifebeat allow me to learn new scientific knowledge and share my own scientific interests! When I'm not doing work, I go for runs, watch movies, and try to make as many jokes about famous psychologists that my friends can bear to listen to (e.g., the name Pavlov rings a bell...). Amy Haddlesey - Assistant Editor
Hi, my name is Amy Haddlesey and I’m in my fourth year of Biochemistry. I’m interested in numerous areas of science including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and innovative technology in medicine. Beyond my biochemistry studies, I have taken a wide variety of courses in other areas including English, Philosophy, Creative Entrepreneurship, and Marketing. Both my degree and electives have cultivated a love for learning new things, and looking deeper than the surface. I’m excited to be apart of the Lifebeat Team and search out the (cool!!) science behind everyday life. In my spare time, beyond writing I enjoy all things creative including drawing, painting, and graphic design. Alana Duffy - Social Media Director Hi! I’m Alana and I’m in my 4th year of Life Science. I’m specializing in Neuroscience, and my 499 research project with Dr. Patrick Stroman takes a closer look at how pain processing is affected by listening to music and looking at happy pictures. The majority of my project involves analyzing fMRI data on MATLAB, a programming software that I have a strong love-hate relationship with. I have recently decided that I want to go to law school, but I love neuroscience because people are weird and I’d like to know why. I love learning new things and teaching them to others, so writing for Lifebeat and managing our social media is a perfect way to do that! My other interests include eating pizza, crying at cute animal videos, and reading Game of Thrones theories on reddit. When I’m not at Club Stauff you can find me tearing up the dance floor at Stages. Nika Elmi - Financial Director
Hi! My name is Nika Elmi, and I find writing biographies tremendously difficult. I'm a Life Sciences major and an Art History minor (trust me, it works). Writing for Lifebeat allows me to satisfy my inner STEM enthusiast, so here we are! The two academic avenues I’ve love learning about most are the inner workings of the brain, and architecture. At some point I’ll figure out how to combine the two. Most of my time is spent exploring different pathways implicated in psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder, because there are many, and my favourite form of self care includes listening to rap music while I knit. Kateryna Karaulshchykova - Promotions Director I’m Kateryna, and I’m in my third year of the biology-psychology specialization program at Queen’s. I currently work at Hotel Dieu Hospital as a research assistant on the outpatient psychiatry unit, specializing in eating disorders. Psychology has been an interest of mine since I was 12, and seeing as I’m a master over-analyzer, why not align that with a profession? I also enjoy music, dogs, photography, sailing and the occasional ARC lifting session. Rosalin Dubois - First Year Intern Hi, I'm Rosalin, and I am in my first year of my science degree! I'm not certain about what my major will be yet, but I'm looking forward to deciding this year. I am very excited to be working with Lifebeat because it allows me to explore two of my passions – writing and science! I have loved to write since I was a child, so the opportunity to continue through university was something I could not ignore. I love to learn new things and expand my understanding of the world, and to share cool scientific facts with others. I can't wait to learn more about other aspects of STEM through upper year courses, and through Lifebeat (obviously!). When I'm not in class or studying, you can find me fencing, reading, catching up on Netflix, thinking about Star Wars, and annoying my friends with puns. I am a rural girl at heart, so being outside and enjoying nature is definitely important to me too. Haley Richardson - Writer
Hi, my name is Haley and I am a third-year biology major, political studies minor. While my degree is primarily in science, I also enjoy the humanities, particularly writing. Lifebeat combines these two passions and keeps me up to date on the most interesting scientific news of the day. When I am not picking weird combinations for my degree or rotting away in Stauffer library I usually enjoy Netflix (despite my commitment issues with tv shows over three seasons long), and cooking whenever my budget allows for anything beyond Kraft Dinner. Greg Eriksen - Writer Hi, my name is Greg and I am a second year Life Science student. There are many areas of science I am interested in however, physiology and the human body intrigue me the most. I am also currently volunteering in the Davies 5 inpatient center in Kingston General Hospital. My goal is to become as involved within the community as possible and Lifebeat provides me with another gateway to do so! I also really enjoy writing for Lifebeat as it allows me to venture into some of the most interesting areas of science! As for my hobbies, I love the outdoors, playing basketball, and binge watching Netflix. Other than at Stauffer, you can usually catch me in the ARC or at the Ale house! Angela Chen - Writer Hi! My name is Angela and I’m in my third year of Life Science and Psychology. I love the balance between studying the intricate details within the human body and its influences our psychological development. Ask me what I’m most passionate about? People – how we interact, how we inspire others, and how we change. I joined Lifebeat because I’m excited about exploring the questions I have that I don’t get a chance to learn about in class. You can always find me sipping coffee, listening to music, and planning the next hiking adventures! |
Tayyaba Bhatti - Writer
I’m a fourth year Life Sciences student and have been a part of Lifebeat for the past three years. I love studying about pathology and diagnostics, and hope to become a doctor one day. I also enjoy research, as it gives me a chance to apply the knowledge I acquire in class to create an impact on the real world. Aside from academics, I love reading, writing, Netflix and cats.

Wara Lounsbury - Writer
Hi! My name is Wara and I’m a fourth year Life Sciences major. There are aspects of science that fascinate me; particularly in the areas of physiology and pathology. I love to learn about how we function, down to the microscopic processes. I also love to learn how disease is caused, and how one seemingly insignificant change can have vast consequences. Outside of classwork, I also greatly enjoy reading books, writing, cuddling with my cat, and drinking tea. Lifebeat gives me the opportunity to channel my interest in writing and science.

Jenna Finley - Writer
Hi, I’m Jenna Finley and I’m in my fourth year of Biology. My main study focus is plant ecology; however, I’m interested in all areas of science – and I’m especially interested in the common home remedies that people use to try and treat any illness that comes their way. Growing up in a Greek household, I’ve heard my fair share of odd remedies, and I hope that you’ll enjoy coming along with me to learn all about them. I’m a new addition to Lifebeat this year and I’m already enjoying the opportunity to write about science that I don’t have the opportunity to research in the lab!

LIFEBEAT NEWSPAPER 2016-2017
Hannah Latour - Editor
My name is Hannah and I'm in my 4th and final year of the Life Sciences program at Queen's University. While it's hard to pick a favorite area of science, I've really enjoyed my neuroscience, pathology and epidemiology courses during my time at Queen's. This year, I am working in a neuroscience lab where we are studying stroke. My favourite thing about editing for Lifebeat is being able to learn about current events in science from my peers. In addition to writing for Lifebeat, I also really like to write about (and eat) food, and am a contributor to Spoon University. Other interests outside of writing include running, yoga, music and coffee.

Alana Duffy - Social Media Director
I’m Alana and I’m a 3rd year Life Science student, intending on specializing in neuroscience. Next year, I will be analyzing functional MRI data with the Stroman lab for my Honour’s thesis project, which I am incredibly excited about. I’m fascinated by neuroscience and anything to do with brain function; people are weird and I want to know why. I love learning new things and sharing them with others, so writing for Lifebeat and managing our social media is the perfect way to do that. Some of my other interests include puppies, pizza, travelling and Game of Thrones. When I’m not at Club Stauff, you can find me tearing up the dance floor at Stages.

Lauren Waichenberg - Fundraising Director
My name is Lauren and I am in my fourth year of Life Sciences at Queen’s University. My favourite areas of science include Anatomy and Global Health. I joined the Lifebeat team 2 years ago as Fundraising Director, as well as being a writer. Before joining the club, I really didn’t see myself as much of a writer, but the amazing members have really created a comfortable environment to share opinions and views on various scientific topics, and this has allowed me to explore a new hobby. I’m excited for my final year as a Lifbeat member!

Shona Campden - Writer
I’m a third year biology student, with particular interest in physiology and pharmacology. This year I’m hoping to graduate from Queen's and start nursing the following September. I’ve always wanted to do something which helps other people, and I’m very interested in both human and social health, so I’m really excited to begin school for nursing! Ever since I was very little I’ve had a love of writing, from short stories as a kid, to an online blog, and I’m really looking forward to contributing more to the Lifebeat team, I think it’s a perfect combination of writing and health sciences. As for a little bit more about me, I’m from a small island near Vancouver, BC, I love spending time outdoors, camping, hiking and running, and I’m a very outgoing person!

Lauren Lin - Writer
Lauren's exposure to first aid as a lifeguard and her experiences in various research labs sparked her interest in healthcare and medicine. Now, she is a second year Psychology major who loves to read and write about bizarre psychological phenomena, healthy lifestyle tips that are scientifically proven to work, and factors in our lives that influence our behaviour and personality. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, doing yoga, trying out new recipes, or rewatching episodes of Friends for the umpteenth time.

Hi! My name is Susan and I’m a 4th year Life Sciences student at Queen’s. I’m currently completing an Honour’s thesis project in the Ferguson lab, studying the effects of cardiovascular signals on neurons from rats. I’m totally enamoured with neuroscience, nutrition, and the French language, and (thanks, LifeBeat), expressing myself through my writing. IMO there’s nothing more important in life than doing the things you love most. So, when I’m not on campus, find me making delicious food, working out, hanging with friends, reading up on the hottest new science, and planning my next travel destination. That… or sleeping. :)
